David Cox was one of the leading landscape painters of the nineteenth century. He became famous for the freshness and immediacy with which he captured the effects of changing light and weather on the landscape, and particularly for his depictions of rugged Welsh hillsides, breezy open fields, and broad windswept beaches.

Presented by Frederick Nettlefold in accordance with the wishes of his brother, the late Joseph Henry Nettlefold, 1882
