Notes

This portrait shows the sixth and last baronet of Aston Hall, Birmingham. Sir Charles Holte may well have adopted the pink costume as a reference to his family's staunch Royalist sympathies during the English Civil War.Although it was unusual for Gainsborough to paint oval canvases, this format was chosen to match a portrait by an unknown artist of Sir Charles' elder brother, Sir Lister Holte (1720-70).

Bequeathed by Sir Charles Hole Bracebridge, 1885.
