Notes | Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (1719) has proved a seminal book in English literature. In this dramatic moment the shipwrecked Crusoe discovers that he is not alone on the island. In the story Crusoe finds the footprint at noon but here Blake sets the scene with the sun setting over the sea. Datable c. 1785-90.
