Notes

Heathfield Hall, sometimes referred to as Heathfield House, was was erected between 1787-90 for the celebrated engineer and inventor, James Watt, and was designed by Samuel Wyatt. Situated to the north of Heathfield Road in Handsworth, the hall was eventually, in 1876, surrounded by a new development of semi-detached villas on the Heathfield estate. Heathfield Hall was demolished in 1927.This watercolour shows the garret at Heathfield Hall where Watt kept his scientific equipment and library with which he amused himself in the declining years of his life.

Presented by Mrs Aitken, 1890.
