Notes

One of a number of nude male studies in Birmingham's collection, originating from a sketchbook. There is a second study of the same nude figure with arms around tree. Both may be an early conception of 'Phyllis & Demophoon' or an 'Apollo and Daphne'.

The figure in this study has his left arm raised higher than the previous study, and he is further away from the tree, which has a very narrow trunk.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903.
