Notes

Elizabeth Siddal is the model for the figure of Rachel in Rossetti's watercolour 'Dante's Vision of Rachel and Leah' (1855), now in the Tate. There she is seated by what appears to be a somewhat puzzling high chair that in the colour version translates into a high-walled well, with Rachel looking down at her reflection in a stream. The subject of this work was taken from Dante's 'Purgatorio', Canto XXVIII.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903.
