According to the Museum's records, on the back of the original frame in Mr. Rose's hand was written: 'I bought it of [sic] Rossetti out of a folio in his studio at 3 o'clock in the morning, and I gave him £15 for it'. The framed edge suggests that this was intended for an engraved illustration that was finally not used.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903.
