Notes | This picture is the second of a series of six designs for stained glass executed between 1861-62 for Morris and Co., to illustrate the story of Saint George. This was the only design to afterwards be made into a watercolour (which was applied in 1868). The Princess Sabra, whom Saint George would later rescue from the dragon, is seen drawing the lot, marked with a death's head, which singles her out to be the dragon's next victim. For other designs in the series see 1904P241 and 1904P245. The picture has an uncertain provenance - it changed hands many times and once went to Australia - but came to the collection from Fairfax Murray. | | Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903. |
