Notes | This is an early study for a figure in the cartoon 'The Spirit of Justice.' Brown submitted the design to the 1845 fresco competition to decorate the Houses of Parliament but was unsuccessful in winning a commission. The pose of the figure matches that of the central bishop in the finished cartoon but in this drawing it is unclear if the figure is male or female and Brown may have had a slightly different design in mind at the beginning of the project.
