The portrait is of the wife of the scientist, philospher, and political reformer Dr Joseph Priestley (1733-1804). The artist painted in England from 1787-1796 and was in Birmingham in 1792. The date of the portrait is based on a letter from the artist to the Birmingham industrialist Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) of 27/3/1793.
