This study is for an illustration which appeared in Moxon's edition of Tennyson's poems (1857, p. 255). The scene illustrates the following stanza from the poem 'The Talking Oak':

And when my marriage morn may fall
She, Dryad-like, shall wear
Alternative leaf and acorn-ball
In wreath about her hair.
