Notes

A sleeping dog appears at the bottom left of Millais' oil painting Isabella (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool), one of the first important Pre-Raphaelite paintings, shown at the Royal Academy in 1849. Its curled-up position differs from these studies, but it appears to be the same animal. At the bottom of the sheet Millais has made some playful variants on the monogram 'J.E.M.'.
