Related works include a pen and ink study of the figure of Mariana in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the painting owned by Tate.
The subject of Mariana refers to her rejection by Angelo; she is subsequently in a moted grange where she waits to be reunited with her fiance. This drawing is preparatory for an illustration to Alfred Tennyson's poem 'Mariana' (1830), which in turn was inspired by Shakespeare's 'Measure for Measure'.
