Notes

The Pre-Raphaelite watercolourist G. P. Boyce, who bought this drawing at an auction sale in 1886, wrote on the back of the work that the sitter might be a Miss Gregson. Subsequent studies, however, have suggested that the sitter might be Miss Ryan, the professional model who sat to Millais in 1852 for The Hugenot.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1906.
