Notes | This is a study for the left leg of Shakespeare in one of the wings in Brown's abandoned triptych 'The Seeds and Fruits of English Poetry.' The central panel later became 'Chaucer at the Court of Edward III' (1851, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney). Brown was meticulous about his work and often made individual studies for small sections of bodies or costumes.
