Notes | This is a study for the Bishop on the in the centre of Ford Madox Brown's cartoon 'The Spirit of Justice.' He designed the cartoon in Paris and submitted it to the 1845 Westminster fresco competition. In the allegorical design Justice listens to the case of an impoverished widow wronged by a powerful Baron. She sits on the top tier of the composition with figures symbolising Mercy, Erudition, Truth and Wisdom. Below her is a row of Kings, noblemen and clergy, the temporal and spiritual advisors. These figures are guarded by a row of knights representing the armed servants of Justice. The circular decoration on the bishop's robes was ommitted in the final cartoon.
