Notes | This is a study for the bearded figure of Erudition in Brown's cartoon 'The Spirit of Justice.' He submitted the cartoon to the 1845 fresco competition to decoprate the newly rebuilt Houses of Parliaiment but was unsuccessful in winning a commission. It is not clear to which work the drapery study and the sketch of two legs on the reverse relate. No figures matching them appear in the cartoon or in 'The Ascension,' an oil sketch Brown was also working on in 1844.
