A preparatory study for an illustration to a poem by Walter Thornbury published in 'Once a Week,' 1862 (15 March, p. 322). The poem 'tells of the appearance in front of the king and his petitioners (?), of the god Zeus in the guise of a stranger' (Elzea, Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné, p. 209).
