This is an illustration to the poem 'The King at the Gate' by Walter Thornbury published in 'Once a Week,' 1862 (15 March, p. 322). It was engraved by Joseph Swain, one of the leading wood-engravers in the 1860s.
The poem and the illustration were republished in 1876 by Thornbury in his anthology 'Historical and Legendary Ballands and Songs.'
