Artist:Frederick Sandys - View biography for Frederick Sandys

Notes

Sandys used tracings to transfer a finished design onto the woodblock. He would then work up the design on the woodblock, in brush and ink, before passing it to the engraver. This tracing is for an illustration to accompany a translation of a macabre German ballad. Both image and text were published in 'Once a Week' (March 1861, vol. 4, no. 23, p. 350).

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1906.
