Between 1824 and 1827 Blake was engaged on a lengthy group of watercolours inspired by the work of Dante. Here the scene is that in which Dante stumbles against Boca degli Abati, who had betrayed the Guelphs at the battle of Montaperti (Inferno xxxii, 70-96).

Presented by the Trustees of the Public Picture Gallery Fund, with assistance from the National Art Collections Fund and the Feeney Trust, 1919.
