The scene refers to Dante's 'Divine Comedy: Purgatory Canto 10, which devotes itself to the punishment of the proud. Here various individuals carry their loads up a steep path with stairs while Dante and Virgil observe their flight, asking for directions in the next stage of their own descent of the mountain.
