Notes

This is one of the watercolours which Turner made for his ambitious set of prints 'Picturesque Views in England and Wales', commissioned by the engraver Charles Heath in 1826 and issued between 1827 and 1838. It was exhibited in 1833 together with 66 other watercolours made for the same series.

Although this is a view of a specific place, Turner is more concerned with creating atmosphere and in recording a personal, emotional response to the landscape than in recording the details of the house and grounds.

Presented in accordance with the wishes of Sir Edward Parkes by his family, 1920.
