The oil was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852 as 'A Huguenot, on St Bartholemew's Day, Refusing to Shield Himself from Danger by Wearing the Roman Catholic Badge'.

In 1572, on St Bartholemew's Day, French Catholics slaughtered thousands of Huguenots Protestants.

Millais has depicted a romantic scene - the Catholic girl trying to persuade her Huguenot lover to escape the massacre by wearing a distinguishing armband.
