Notes | Gwynne-Jones trained as a solicitor before becoming a professional artist in 1914. He served with the Cheshire Regiment in the First World War and was awarded the DSO for gallantry during the battle of the Somme. After the war, he and his mother rented a house near the village of Froxfield in Hampshire. His paintings captured the atmosphere of the English landscape as it changed with the seasons. He saw the landscape as an almost magical or spiritual entity which could reflect or focus human emotions. | | Presented by the Trustees of the Public Picture Gallery Fund, 1924. |
