Notes | Cox had a light, delicate and free way with colour, and this, together with his use of a rough textured wrapping paper from Dundee in Scotland as his preferred surface to draw upon, led to his work being technically accomplished yet full of life and never studied or conventional. The paper he favoured is available today, and is much used by contemporary watercolour artists, it is termed 'Cox Paper'. Cox made a journey to Devon in 1819 and exhibited views of Lynmouth in watercolour in 1824, 1826 and 1828 but the present sheet is undated.
