Notes | The latest date for this particular sketch is circa 1865. Burne-Jones had been working on 'Wine of Circe' since 1863, and was unhappy with its composition. This sketch probably reflects the original layout of the finished watercolour, as the background with ships is identical in the painting. Burne-Jones had written repeatedly of his dismay at the figure of Circe, and eventually worked it out between 1866-69 in collaboration with Maria Zambaco, who modelled for the finished figure of Circe. | Bequeathed by James Richardson Holliday, 1927. |
