Notes

From a bound volume containing 86 studies for illustrations to 'The Story of Cupid and Psyche' made to accompany the poem in William Morris' 'The Earthly Paradise'.

The first two sketches are similar to the wood engravings but less detailed, particularly that of 'Psyche in the Garden'. The wood engraving of 'Psyche at the Bath' differs considerably from the sketch here, notably in that in the drawing Psyche is clothed.

Bequeathed by James Richardson Holliday, 1927.
