From a bound volume containing 86 studies for illustrations to 'The Story of Cupid and Psyche' made to accompany the poem in William Morris' 'The Earthly Paradise'.

The final engraving differs from this design in the amount of space between the two figures and in the poses, particularly of Psyche. In the final engraving, Venus is almost entirely nude, whereas here she is fully draped.

Bequeathed by James Richardson Holliday, 1927.
