Oakley moved in 1836 to Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, where Thomas Baker was living and working. It was here in 1841 that he met and painted the celebrated painter, who is a highly significant figure in the history of art in the Midlands and in Birmingham. The signature and the date of 1841 were only noticed recently, being extremely faintly inscribed by the artist,
