This silver £1 coin was minted at Oxford, King Charles I’s capital for much of the Civil War he fought against Parliament during the 1640s. One of the largest coins ever produced in Britain, it weighs more than 12 modern £1 coins. The text on the reverse sets out what Charles claimed he was fighting for RELIG. PROT. LEG. ANG. LIBER. PAR. (The Protestant
religion, the laws of England, the liberty of Parliament).
