Notes | Joseph Chamberlain was born in London and came to Birmingham at the age of eighteen. He entered the House of Commons as a Liberal candidate for Birmingham in 1876. He became President of the Board of Trade but in 1885 he resigned his post in Gladstone's Cabinet over the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. When he returned to Office it was as Secretary of State for the Colonies in the Conservative Cabinet of Lord Salisbury. | | Presented by the Birmingham Unionist Association, 1937. |
