Fantin-Latour was a central figure within the Paris art community during the late nineteenth century. Throughout his career, Fantin-Latour painted allegorical and mythological subjects. L'Aurore et la Nuit demonstrates the artist's loyalty to academic subject matter, using female figures as symbols of Dawn and Night in an imaginary composition.
