Notes | This is the first design for Morris's 'Snakeshead' pattern. It is based on the Snakeshead fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris), a plant of the lily family with unusual checquered petals that grows wild in some British meadows. The design was manufactured for Morris & Co by Thomas Wardle. Four of the printing blocks for this design are in the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow. | | Purchased from Morris & Co through Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1940 |
