This is the first design for Morris's 'Snakeshead' pattern. It is based on the Snakeshead fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris), a plant of the lily family with unusual checquered petals that grows wild in some British meadows. The design was manufactured for Morris & Co by Thomas Wardle. Four of the printing blocks for this design are in the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow.

Purchased from Morris and Co through the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1941.
