Notes | Piper was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee to record bomb damage in cities during the Second World War (1939-1945). Piper was interested in depicting the picturesquein the ruinous. In 1941 Piper started painting country cottages often viewed by moonlight. The dark eerie atmosphere of this work, combined with the rough and heavily textured shapes of the buildings echo the unsettling period of war. | | Presented by Sir Kenneth Clark through the Contemporary Art Society, 1946. |
