Notes

The painting shows John Kemble (1757-1823) as both Hotspur & Glendower in the scene from Shakespeare's 'Henry IV Part 1'. Shakespearian subjects and the London theatre were a frequent source of inspiration to Fuseli, whose admiration for Michelangelo coupled with a Germanic and gothic imagination anticipated the Romantic Movement at the end of the century.
