Notes

Legend tells that when Theseus came to Crete to fight the Minotaur, Ariadne helped him to find his way out of the labyrinth in which the Minotaur lived. In return for saving his life Theseus promised to take Ariadne back to Athens. In the painting, Ariadne is just waking up to realise that she has been left behind. Southall liked this painting so much he hung it in his dining room.

Bequeathed by Mrs A E Southall in memory of her husband, 1948.
