The subject is from an old English song known as the 'Ballard of Chevy Chase'. The song tells of a hunt or 'chase' in the Cheviot Hills on the Scottish borders. The hunt is led by Percy, the Earl of Northumberland. The Scottish Earl Douglas interprets the hunt as an invasion of Scotland and a bloody battle is fought.
