Maker Information

Artist:Sir Edward Burne-Jones - View biography for Sir Edward Burne-Jones

Notes

Head study of a young woman, very likely Margaret Burne-Jones, the artist's daughter, as the features are strikingly similar to portraits of her. This may be a head study for 'The Annunciation' (Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight), specifically the Angel Gabriel. The dates of 'The Annunciation' correspond with the dates of this sketchbook, so it is plausible to make such an identification. Margaret would have been between the ages of 10-13 whilst the 'Annunciation' was being executed, and would have a young, androgynous, ethereal quality to her face, which Burne-Jones perhaps sought for his Gabriel.

Presented by Mrs Angela Thirkell.
