One of several studies in Birmingham's Collection for the Perseus Series of paintings (Series I is now in the Stattsgalerie, Stuttgart; Series II in the Southampton City Art Gallery).

The particular composition in which this study was used in the final versions is often referred to as 'The Doom Fulfilled', rather than 'Perseus Slaying the Sea-Monster' or 'Sea-Serpent'. This study was not used in the final compositions.
