Notes

A page from a sketchbook of copies of architectural and decorative details from Romanesque and Byzantine sources.

Studies of details of armour, one of which is inscribed 'section', a helmet, and a shoe. The centre study of a brigantine is taken from Viollet le Duc, 'Dictionnaire Raisonne du Mobilier Francais de L'Epoque Carlovingienne a la Renaissance' (vol. 5, p. 235, fig. 6a -c. 1470). That on the left of a foot and right arm is from Volume 5, page 193, figure 3, which represent two statues of Oriental emperors brought back from Acre to St. Mark's, Venice. The study on the lower left of a chainmail helmet is from Volume 5, page 259, figure 3 (second-half of the 13th century), and that on the lower right is from Volume 5, page 261, figure 7. The study on the upper right is of an elbow plate from the statue of du Gueselin at St. Denis dating from 1350-1380, and is drawn from Volume 5, page 301, figure 4. Verso is an unphotographed, uncatalogued sketch of armour for the neck of a horse or similar animal.

Presented by Mrs Angela Thirkell, 1952.
