Notes | Cotman's genius lies in his almost abstract approach to the technique of watercolour. Although he painted real places he was much more interested in the shapes found in nature and landscape. In the words of Martin Hardie, '...(he) somewhat anticipates an aspect of Post-Impressionist and Cubist art'. For many later artists he has proved an inspiration on account of his advanced ideas, and his use of flat planes of colour. This drawing was made after one of his many visits to Yorkshire - the county which significantly enabled him to produce many of his greatest watercolours. | Presented by J Leslie Wright 1953, received on his death, 1954. |
