This scene may well represent the harbour at Boulogne which Bonington visited on a sketching tour in 1821. This was his first documented tour, probably taken in the company of Alexandre Colin, he visited ports on the northern coast of France including St. Valery, Calais and Dunkirk.

Presented by J Leslie Wright1953, received on his death, 1954.
