Notes | There is some disagreement around this image but it is generally accepted that the depiction is a variation on the classical theme 'Hercules at the Crossroads'. Where Hercules has to choose between two female figures personifying Vice [Pleasure] and Virtue. Artists usually depicted the two figures accosting Hercules but Dürer depicts Vice literally reclining in the lap of Luxury (portrayed as a Satyr) and Virtue clubbing her. Hercules appears to attack Vice whilst also intercepting the blows of Virtue. | Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1955. |
