Notes

Picasso first met the young divorced Jacqueline Roque in 1953, and they eventually married in 1961. In November 1956, he began a portrait of Jacqueline for an exhibition poster. Hardly ever satisfied, a second portrait was begun a few days later, ' also in three colours. Worked right side out with litho crayon, three zincs... At the time I was away from paris. Run executed in an excellent manner by Berto at Marseilles (using), an off-set press... '(Fernand Mourlot).
it was after the Secnd World War that colour lithography came into its own at the Mourlot Lithography Workshop. Braque, Chagall, Miro and Picasso all printed at this great atelier, though it was Picasso who ensured the firm's lasting fame.

Purchased from Messrs Berggruen and Co, 1957.
