Notes

The theme of the artist and his model, reality and illusion, fascinated Picasso throughout his life. As he remarked in 1965,' What truth, truth cannot exist...if I pursue a truth on my canvas I can paint a hundred canvases with this same truth. Which one, then, is the truth? And what is truth - the thing that acts as any model, or what I am painting. No, its like in everything else. Truth does not exist...'.

Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1957.
