Notes | This coin was issued by Julius Caesar in 48-47 BC, when he was fighting a civil war with the supporters of his great rival Pompey. Against this background Caesar has chosen an interesting reverse design. It shows a trophy; a kind of victory monument the Romans set up on battlefields, which consisted of enemy arms and armour hung up on a wooden pole. The equipment shown here is typical of the Celts of Gaul, whom Caesar had conquered during the 50s BC. The political message is clear: 'Support me, I am the man who conquered Gaul for you'. | | Purchased from J Davis. |
