Notes

The capriccio, which is a fanciful composition making use of both real and imagined elements, was a speciality of Ricci's. His use of bodycolour, which is watercolour rendered opaque by the addition of Chinese White, made these works strong enough in pigment to be regularly hung side by side with oil paintings. One of the biggest collections of Ricci's works is that of HM the Queen in the Royal Library at Windsor, where there is an almost identical work.

Presented by Oliver Morland through the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1958.
