Notes

The picture has suffered much damage, 20% of the original painting has been lost and 20% has been over-painted. In the nineteenth century, the right hand panel was replaced and the two figures of Barnabus and Bartholomew were repainted, and a dove was added (now removed) above the head of the Virgin Mary. The scene marks the birth of the Christian Church when the apostles began to spread the Gospel to other peoples.

Purchased with the assistance of the National Art Collections Fund, 1959.
