Notes

Vespasian was the first emperor who did not belong to the old Roman aristocracy. Instead he came from a provincial Italian middle-class family. He had a successful military career, which
included commanding a legion during the Roman invasion of Britain in 43. He emerged as emperor after a civil war that followed the death of Nero in 68. Appropriately the reverse of this coin depicts
FORTUNA AUGUSTI, 'The Luck of the Emperor'.

Purchased from Spink and Son Ltd, 1961.
